Alignment is the characteristic that describes a character's moral and ethical outlook.
Description[]
Each character has one of these nine possible alignments:
Lawful Good | Neutral Good | Chaotic Good |
Lawful Neutral | True Neutral | Chaotic Neutral |
Lawful Evil | Neutral Evil | Chaotic Evil |
They are typically presented in a 3x3 grid like this, because they differ along two axes:
The Good vs. Evil axis[]
This is sometimes referred to as the "moral alignment".
- Good implies compassion for the well-being of others.
- Neutral implies a balance between good and evil.
- Evil implies unscrupulously harming and killing others.
The Lawful vs. Chaotic axis[]
This is sometimes referred to as the "ethical alignment".
- Lawful implies respect for order and authority, honor, and keeping promises.
- Neutral implies a balance between law and chaos.
- Chaotic implies rebelliousness, and striving for freedom.
