Icewind Dale Wiki

The Burial Isle is where the barbarian tribes bury their heroes. It is the third major area of the Heart of Winter expansion.

Description[]

It is an island in Maer Dualdon (the large lake that borders Lonelywood).

The barbarian tribes of the Icewind Dale region have interred many of their fallen chieftains and greatest warriors here. They initially used the underground barrows for this, but eventually ran out of space there and thus also dug some graves on the surface.[1]

Recently, a desecration occurred here, which left an evil taint on the island and awoke and angered the spirits of the dead.[2] This makes the isle a very dangerous place for visitors now.

Even more recently, the barbarian shaman Hjollder has been banished to this isle.

Plot[]

During the Heart of Winter main quest, the party must come here by boat in order to reunite with Hjollder and convince him to defy banishment.

Enemies[]

The outdoors map has 42 potentially-hostile creatures on Core Rules and below, and 50 on Hard and Insane:

Creature type Count Loot
Cadaverous undead
Barrow Wight (lvl 9) 15 (21 on Hard/Insane) minor loot
Drowned Dead (lvl 11) 8 minor loot
Spectral undead
Ghost Shaman (lvl 10) 3 (5 on Hard/Insane) -
5 initially non-hostile
NPC: Skaldar (lvl 15) 1 initially non-hostile -
NPC: Polar Bear Spirit (lvl 20) 1 initially non-hostile -
Black Bear Spirit (lvl 13) +3 -
Wolf Spirit (lvl 10) +6 -

The initially non-hostile ones can be turned hostile pretty easily by talking to one of their group.

The ones listed with the +x notation are not on the map initially, but rather spawn in an ambush:

  • Polar Bear ambush:
When you turn the Polar Bear Spirit hostile, the 9 other animal spirits appear out of thin air – some near the polar bear, some a bit further away. Most of them proceed to walk towards the party.

Each time you try to rest outdoors, up to 3 additional Barrow Wights or Drowned Dead may spawn and awaken you from your rest. (Inside Edion's Tower, it is safe to rest though.)

For the enemies inside the barrows, see that article.
