Expeditious Retreat is a level 1 Arcane spell from the Alteration school, which was added in the Enhanced Edition, that briefly doubles the caster's movement speed.

Casting this spell doubles the caster's movement speed for 3 rounds, with the following restrictions during the spell's duration:
- The caster cannot be affected by other movement-altering effects
- The caster cannot attack
- The caster cannot cast further spells
- The caster cannot activate items or abilities

Other movement-altering effects, such as Haste and Slow, cannot affect the caster while this spell is in effect. While Expeditious Retreat is active, the caster cannot attack, cast spells, or use any items or special abilities... he/she can only run. | ” |

- As a level 1 spell, Mages and Sorcerers are able to select this spell as one of their starting spells during Character generation

- At levels 3, 5, and 7, Sorcerers are able to select an additional level 1 arcane spell to add to their known spells

- Although name and description already exist in the game files of the original Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, the spell itself was only implemented in the Enhanced Edition.
- This spell does not exist in Baldur's Gate II, or the Enhanced Editions of either I or II
