Icewind Dale Wiki

Getting Joril's badge is a step of the main quest in chapter 5+ of Icewind Dale.

Quick walkthrough[]

  1. Explore the Frost Giant Caves. (optional)
  2. Confront Joril and take Joril's Badge via dialog or combat.

Walkthrough[]

Note: If you skip this step of the main quest in chapter 5, you have to come back and do it during chapter 6a.

In the Frost Giant Caves, follow the main cave around the corner to get to the throne room where the non-hostile[1] frost giant leader Joril stands.

If you want to do the side-quest in this area, it makes more role-playing sense to do that first:

Available side-quest
Optional quests Given by Reward
Freeing the frost giants' slaves Davin 600,000 exp

In addition, the "north cave" has a quest-like encounter with Kontik, and the quest item Barrel of Pure Water.

When you are ready to confront Joril in order to get Joril's Badge, you can do so in three ways:

  • Tricking Joril (best exp reward for Paladin)
If you question Joril's authority and demand his badge, he assumes that you were sent by his master. Reinforce that misconception, and he gives you his badge peacefully. Tricking him like this grants you 80,000 exp.
    dialog path

    ...

What gives you the right to rule this glacier, Joril? Certainly the slaves would contest your rule.
    –OR–
I see no symbol of office... no title, Joril. By what right do you rule?

This badge gives me the right, *small* one. It is a symbol given to all lieutenants in service to the master. Where once my father held it, now *I* hold it.

If that badge proves you rule, then I've come to take it from you.
(Alternatively, if you have already learned about Kreg Frostbeard from Kerish and your speaking party member has 12+ CHA, you also get to the goal via the other responses – just don't call Joril a donkey.)

    ...

Bah! And what if I refuse to hand it over, *little* one? Do you think you can defeat me and my warriors combined?

Joril, think about it. If you do not give me the badge, who do you think will be sent to collect it next? [→ 80,000 exp]

Urrrh! To the Nine Hells with you! Here, take the damn badge... but when you return to your master tell him of my feat. He will see that Kreg was too weak to carry out his plans!

By continuing the conversation after that, you can learn that Joril feeds slaves to the wyrm Frostbite. If your speaking party member is a Paladin[2], you can demand he free the slaves. This grants another 180,000 exp, but blows your cover and turns Joril hostile.

dialog path (from end of previous[3])
So tell me, Joril. How did you manage to kill your father?
    –OR–
What is this feat you speak of?

Humph... I challenged the old fool to prove his worth as Jarl. I told him a true leader would be able to subdue the wyrms in the cavern. He couldn't refuse me, or he'd lose the respect of the tribe...

    ...

Tell me about these sacrifices, Joril.
(Or choose another response, and then circle back to the sacrifices.)

Slaves. I give the wyrms a slave a day. There's plenty available, and I can always get more.

The slaves are to be freed, Joril. [good Paladin only] [→ 180,000 exp]

Free the slaves? Never... Who are you really? If you were who you pretend to be, you would never make such a demand. Die, fool!

  • Accepting Joril's challenge to fight him (best exp reward for non-Paladin)
If you question Joril's authority and demand his badge, but then accept his combat challenge instead of continuing to trick him, you get 180,000 exp and he turns hostile. You can then defeat him and pick up his badge from his corpse.
    dialog path

...[Starts out the same as for the "Tricking Joril" path, but then:]...

Bah! And what if I refuse to hand it over, *little* one? Do you think you can defeat me and my warriors combined?

Very well, if it is a fight you want, a fight you shall have. [→ 180,000 exp]
  • Simply killing Joril
If you initiate combat with Joril in any other way than described above (e.g. by insulting him in dialog or by force-attacking him), you forfeit the in-dialog experience rewards – but you can still pick up the badge from his corpse.

As soon as the game registers Joril's Badge in your inventory, no matter how you got it, you receive another 80,000 exp.[4]

Explore the rest of the Frost Giant Caves for combat and loot if you want, and then return to the Wyrm's Tooth outdoors map and exit it via the tunnel in the top-right corner[5] to reach a small transition area.

This transition area has a tunnel leading to the next chapter's area. But its top-right edge also gives you access to the world map, which you may want to take advantage of for an optional detour:

Traveling to "Wyrm's Tooth" via the world map brings you back to the transition area.

Once you are ready to continue, take the bottom-right tunnel[6] there to reach Lower Dorn's Deep:

Journal entries[]

Important Events
We talked to Joril Frostbeard and demanded his badge of office. He refused at first, demanding to know who sent us to collect it. We were vague with our answer and led him to believe that we were collecting it for some "higher authority."
Important Events
Wonderful. Our paladin demanded that Joril Frostbeard free the slaves he held in captivity. Naturally, Joril became suspicious of our true identities and attacked us. Oh well.
Important Events
Although we probably could have continued to reason with Joril to try and get his badge of office, we decided to fight him for it instead.
Important Events
We decided to continue to reason with Joril to try and get his badge of office. The plan worked, and it is now in our possession.

Footnotes[]

  1. attacking any frost giant in this area (except for Gorg) turns Joril hostile.
  2. Not counting Blackguard.
  3. This dialog path is only available immediately after Joril gives you his badge, while still in the same conversation.
  4. This is in additional to any experience you may have have gotten during the conversation.
  5. Alternatively, if you got Dugmaren's Key during The slaves and the salamanders, you can reach the transition area via the central top door in the Museum basement.
  6. The other two tunnels on the transition area both lead back to Wyrm's Tooth.
