The Gloomfrost is an ancient natural landmark, and the third major area of the Heart of Winter expansion.
Description[]
It lies to the northeast of the Icewind Dale region, on a glacier beyond the Reghed Glacier.[Note 1]
The geology of this place is unnaturally jagged, with huge spikes of dark ice protruding towards the sky. The barbarian tribes believe that this where the sun was born, scarring the ice as it left Toril.[1]
Below the surface of the Gloomfrost lie winding ice caverns, which include the "Seer Caves", residence of a mythical prophet referred to as the Gloomfrost Seer.
Plot[]
During the Heart of Winter main quest, the party must travel here in order to consult the Gloomfrost Seer.

Enemies[]
The outdoors map has between 52 and 56 hostile creatures, regardless of the difficulty setting.
There are three possible configurations of monsters that the map can have (A, B, C). Which of them you get, is chosen at random when your party first travels here:
Creature type | Count | Loot | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
A | B | C | ||
Winter Wolf (lvl 6) | 13 | 12 | 14 | minor loot |
Snow Troll (lvl 7) | 13 | 13 | 13 | - |
Polar Bear (lvl 8) | 3 | 2 | 4 | - |
Glacier Yeti (lvl 8) | 10 | 10 | 10 | minor loot
|
Frost Salamander (lvl 8) | 10+2 | 11+2 | 11+2 | ? |
Frost Giant (lvl 14) | 2 | 2 | 2 | minor loot |
The ones listed with the +x
notation are not on the map initially, but rather appear in an ambush:
- Frost Salamander ambush:
When the battle with the first group of Frost Salamanders (near the top-right) starts, two more salamanders spawn behind you (in the very top-right corner), and walk towards you.
Some of the monsters can wander away from their initial position.
Each time you try to rest here, up to 3 additional Winter Wolves, Snow Trolls, or Frost Salamanders may spawn and awaken you from your rest.
Traps[]
None on the outdoors map.

Footnotes[]
Notes:
- ↑ The artistic Heart of Winter worldmap makes it look like the Gloomfrost might lie on top of Kelvin's Cairn, but the in-game lore makes is clear that it actually lies far behind that mountain.
