The Great Oak is the large, magical oak tree that keeps Kuldahar from freezing over.
Description[]
The tree radiates warmth, allowing Kuldahar and the surrounding farmlands to survive in the harsh surroundings of the Spine of the World.
The houses of Kuldahar have been built around, and in some cases into, the roots and stem of the tree.
History[]
The seed which became the Great Oak was planted by Sylvanus during the early days of Faerûn.
For centuries, druids have tended to the oak and the shrine to Sylvanus there. For a long time, they had kept other people away from it – but under Archdruid Tolben, human settlers were allowed refuge underneath the warmth of the tree, and the town of Kuldahar was founded.
Since then, the town and the tree have lived in symbiosis. A druid continues to live in the shrine.
During the events of the Icewind Dale game, the power of the tree seems to grow weaker – reducing its circle of warmth and causing Kuldahar Pass to freeze. The townspeople are worried that Kuldahar itself may be threatened if this trend continues.
