Icewind Dale is an isolated arctic region in The North, the home of the Ten Towns, and namesake of the Icewind Dale game series.

Geography[]

Icewind Dale is located at the northern end of the Sword Coast, bordered to the South by the Spine of the World mountain range, to the North by the Sea of Moving Ice, and to the east by the Reghed Glacier.

The only major mountain located inside the dale is the volcanic Kelvin's Cairn, which falls off into a valley called Bremen's Run.

Lakes in the dale include Lac Dinneshere and Maer Dualdon, both of which supply the Shaengarne river and are rich in knucklehead trout.

Inhabitants[]

The only civilized settlements in the dale are the Ten Towns, a confederation of ten villages which includes:

Furthermore, Icewind Dale is the home of various barbarian tribes. During the story of the Heart of Winter expansion, several of the tribes set up a unified barbarian camp in Bremen's Run near Lonelywood.

Economy[]

The barbarians tend to stay to themselves and have little interest in trade.

The Ten Towns have an active encomony based on fishing and logging, and trade both with each other as well as with the South, exporting mainly knucklehead trout. There are three trade routes southwards to Luskan and Neverwinter and the rest of the Sword Coast:

  1. By ship along the Shaengarne river and then through the open sea, thus bypassing the Spine of the World altogether.
  2. Through the Spine of the World via the Western Pass.
  3. Through the Spine of the World via the Eastern Pass, passing by Kuldahar.
