Kresselack, the Black Wolf, is an undead barbarian king.
Location[]
He stands in the room at the end of the hall in the bottom level of Kresselack's Tomb.
Background[]
Long before the events of the Icewind Dale game, Kresselack was a king known as the Black Wolf, who ruled as a ruthless warlord and conqueror.
When he became old, he found himself concerned with his own mortality, so he ordered the construction of a massive tomb for himself. To keep its location a secret, he killed all the workers he'd tasked with building it once it was finished.
Then, he sacrificed his loyal followers – and finally himself – to his god. He thought this would curry favor with his god in the afterlife, but instead it had the inadvertent effect of binding his undead soul to the tomb for eternity. His loyal followers became the undead guardians of the tomb.
With centuries to reflect, his former war-loving nature has waned, and his only concern is for the simple comforts of keeping his tomb warm and well-lit.
Interaction[]
When you talk to him and ask him about the source of the disturbances in the pass, he agrees to answer your question if you first complete a task for him:
- Stopping Auril's plot to freeze the Vale (13,000 xp + magic items)
If your speaking party member is an assassin, you get a dialogue option to ask for payment, in which case he gives you a gem.
Once you have completed Kresellack's task, and report back to him, he reveals that he does not know what is causing the disturbances – just that it is no-one in the Vale of Shadows.
Attacking him is pointless, as he cannot be killed.
