Larrel is a baelnorn lich, and former elven archmage.
Location[]
He walks around in the astrolabe on top of Labelas Tower of the Severed Hand.
Background[]
- Main article: Hand of the Seldarine#History
Reign[]
Centuries before the events of the Icewind Dale game, Larrel was an elven archmage. He led a tribe of sun elves north into the Spine of the World region and founded a fortress, the Hand of the Seldarine, in a valley there.
The elves of the Hand thrived under his leadership, especially after they entered into an alliance with the dwarves of Dorn's Deep. For decades, the elves and dwarves together pushed back the hordes of orcs and goblins that kept forming in the region.
Downfall[]
But when weapons of the alliance were found in the hands of the dark horde, Larrel falsely accused the dwarves of betraying him, and let the alliance break apart.
After this, the armies of the Hand slowly started to lose the war against the orcish horde. His daughter Evayne tried to persuade Larrel to reconcile with the dwarves, but he ignored her advice and instead made preparations to place a mythal (a powerful, but dangerous protective spell) around the fortress. When Evayne traveled to Dorn's Deep on her own initiative and did not return, Larrel assumed that the dwarves had murdered her.
Death[]
When the Hand was finally invaded by the horde of orcs and goblins, Larrel and his wizards completed casting the mythal. But it malfunctioned, draining the souls of all living beings in the fortress (elves, orcs, and goblins alike) – killing them all, and bringing many of the dead back as undead spirits unable to find rest.
Undeath[]
This angered Labelas Enoreth (the elven god of longevity and time), so he cursed Larrel and condemned him to watch over the ruins of the Hand as a baelnorn lich until his people were put to rest.
In this undead form, Larrel has let his bitterness against the dwarves consume him, and has gone insane over the centuries.
Interaction[]
When you first reach the astrolabe, Larrel can only mumble incoherently. If you pester or threaten him, he turns hostile (which won't end well for you).
To change this situation, you must talk to Gelarith and complete the quest:
- Repairing the astrolabe (118,000 exp)
After this, Larrel is more talkative. You can ask him about the history of the Hand, and of course also give him the Heartstone Gem to complete the main plot of chapter 3:
- Giving Larrel the Heartstone Gem (54,000 exp)
This adds Upper Dorn's Deep (where chapter 4 starts) to the worldmap. Afterwards, you can ask Larrel to send you directly from the astrolabe to either Kuldahar or Upper Dorn's Deep, if you want.
Larrel still holds his irrational grudge against the dwarves, though. Later, in chapter 4, you can return to Larrel and bring him evidence that shows him the error of his ways:
- Discovering the fate of Larrel's daughter (56,000 exp)
This lets him finally feel at peace.
