Resistances are relatively common defensive combat stats found throughout Icewind Dale. Resistances can appear as either inherent stats on enemies, such as a Yeti's natural Cold Resistance, or as defensive stats applied through spells, equipment, or potions. A Resistance is simply a protection from a damage type, represented as a percentage, which can be seen on your Character Record page. Resistances will reduce any incoming damage of the specified damage type by the percentage that you or the creatures you are fighting have accrued, as opposed to Armor Class, which allows for protections to increase the likelihood to avoid damage altogether. For instance, if a character with 25% Fire Resistance is struck with a spell that would normally deal 20 Fire damage, he will instead take only 15 damage. Resistances exist for elemental, physical, and magic damage types. There also exists a Magic Resistance stat, but unlike Magic Damage Resistance which will reduce incoming damage from spells like Magic Missiles or Skull Trap, Magic Resistance provides a percentage chance to completely resist incoming spells, whether damaging or not.
