All priest and wizard spells are categorized into eight schools of magic.[Note 1]

A school of magic groups related spells together. Each school also has one or two opposed schools, with spells of characteristics that contradict the purpose of the actual school.

Mages can specialize in one school, though this means that they are unable to cast spells from the opposed school(s). They benefit from this, however, by having one more memorized spell of each level available, compared to a generalist.

Notes[]

  1. The Player's Handbook of the groundlying Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset counts nine schools. "Greater Divination" and "Lesser Divination" weren't split in Icewind Dale and are all pooled in the school of Divination.
