Sleep is a level 1 Arcane spell from the Enchantment school, that puts weak creatures within an area to sleep.

Description[]

Sleep causes a comatose slumber to come upon 2-8 hit dice/levels of creatures (other than undead and certain other creatures specifically excluded from the spell's effects). All creatures to be affected by the Sleep spell must be within 30 feet of each other. Monsters with 4+3 Hit Dice (4 Hit Dice plus 3 hit points) or more are unaffected. The center of the area of effect is determined by the spellcaster. Though it's not the stuff of which legends are made, magically sleeping opponents can be attacked with substantial bonuses - although they will awaken after the first hit.

— Original Game

Sleep causes a comatose slumber to come upon 2d4 Hit Dice of creatures (other than undead and certain other creatures specifically excluded from the spell's effects). Monsters with 5 or more Hit Dice are unaffected. Though it's not the stuff of which legends are made, attacks against magically sleeping opponents never miss—although they will awaken after the first hit.

— Enhanced Edition

Effects[]

Original Game[]

This spell allows the caster to temporarily put creatures with 4 Hit Dice plus 2 Hit Points or less, within a 15 foot radius area to sleep, leaving them vulnerable and incapacitated until they are struck or the spell wears off after 5 rounds per level of the caster. Undead are immune to this sleep effect.

Enhanced Edition[]

This spell allows the caster to temporarily put creatures with 4 or fewer Hit Dice within a 9 foot radius area to sleep, leaving them vulnerable and incapacitated until they are struck or the spell wears off after 5 rounds per level of the caster. Undead are immune to this sleep effect.

Starting Spells[]

  • As a level 1 spell, Mages and Sorcerers are able to select this spell as one of their starting spells during Character generation

Notes[]

  • The usefulness of this spell is very short-term, as there are very few enemies lower than 5 Hit Dice who are actually susceptible to this spell. This is good only for the Prologue, after that it becomes ineffective.
  • In the Baldur's Gate Series, enemies under the effects of this spell do not wake up when attacked. This has been changed in Icewind Dale.
