Stopping Auril's plot to freeze the Vale of Shadows is a step of the main quest in chapter 1 of Icewind Dale.

Quick walkthrough[]

  1. Promise Kresselack to deal with the priestess of Auril.
  2. Kill Lysan in the Vale Ice Cave.
  3. Return to Kresselack.

Walkthrough[]

Kresselack demands that you stop the Aurilite priestess who is threatening his tomb. You must[Note 1] promise to do so.

Exit Kresselack's Tomb[Note 2] back out to the Vale of Shadows outdoors map, and there head into the Vale Ice Cave.

Lysan, the priestess in question, now[Note 1] stands in front of the tents inside the cave, guarded by some Yetis. When you get close to Lysan, she initiates dialog. You can learn a bit about her intentions by indulging her in conversation, but no matter what you say, it ends with combat. Kill her.

Return to Kresselack in Kresselack's Tomb, level 3, and tell him that you have completed his task. He now answers your question about the evil that plagues Kuldahar – by telling you that it does not come from the Vale of Shadows. (13,000 exp)

Having learned that, you can return to Kuldahar:

Important Events
We spoke with Kresselack's spirit, and he claims he is not responsible for the evil that plagues Kuldahar... but he claims to know who is. In exchange for an answer, he asked a boon of our party: Slay a priestess of Auril who has recently tried to enter his tomb and extinguish the warmth within. Only when she is dead will he give us the answer we seek.

We found the priestess of Auril that Kresselack spoke of, a woman named Lysan. She didn't welcome the intrusion, and she attacked us.
Important Events
We killed Lysan, the Aurilite priestess, and returned to Kresselack. Unfortunately, all Kresselack could tell us was that neither he nor anyone in the Vale of Shadows was responsible for the evil plaguing Kuldahar. It seems we will need to go back to Arundel and inform him of this. Perhaps he will have a clue as to what we should do next.

  1. 1.0 1.1 The priestess does not spawn, and thus the main quest cannot progress, until you accept Kresselack's task. If you told him no, or that you need to think about it, you must talk to him again and tell him that you will do it after all.
  2. There is no fast-travel out of Kresselack's Tomb, so you have to backtrack through all three levels. The in-game map screen has automap notes to mark the exits, in case you forgot which way you came from.
