Toril, or Aber-Toril, is the "main" planet of the Forgotten Realms setting.
Location[]
It is the third planet from the Sun in so-called "Realmspace", a pocket of space in the Prime Material plane.
Moon[]
Toril is orbited by a single moon, called Selûne.
Continents[]
The planet's largest land mass is a supercontinent which is considered by its inhabitants as three continents:
- Faerûn (the western part), where the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights game series are set.
- Kara-Tur (the eastern part).
- Zakhara (a peninsula in the South).
There are additional continents across the ocean, but they are not well-explored.
Behind the fourth wall[]
While the Forgotten Realms campaign setting contains other planets, other solar systems, and even whole other planes of existence, the planet Toril is the setting's main focus.
It represents the more "conventional" high-fantasy part of the setting (taking much inspiration from real-world medieval earth), as opposed to some of the more outlandish and bizarre parts of the setting represented e.g. by other planes.
It is here that most Forgotten Realms products, such as campaign books, video games, and novels, primarily focus on.
